The Future of God (A Conversation between Deepak Chopra, M.D. and Kyra Phillips, CNN)

Deepak Chopra explains why models of reality, whether they be scientific, theological or religious, cannot give direct access to reality.

Kyra: So is science the way to figure out the truth?

Deepak. No. Science is a good way to create a model of the truth that works. I send you an email. I send you text messages. I send you an emoticon. Based on this that information goes into your brain, based on that you have emotions and feelings. I send you a dancing banana and you get a dopamine hit to your brain

Kyra: (laughs)

Deepak: But we have no idea what is actually going on. What’s his name? Sir Arthur Eddington, was a famous astrophysicist. He actually confirmed Einstein’s Theory of Relativity through an observation. His famous quote is “Something unknown is doing we don’t know what.” So we have no idea what reality is. How do we access reality? You say how do we find out? I would say not through any model. Science is a model, a system of thought, a system of experimentation, measurement, and observation. Then we have another model, theology which says there’s God and you know we can understand God by prayer, meditation, reflection, stillness, transcendence, understanding the difference between what is real and what is not real. So the invisible is real and the visible is not real if you understand what I mean. But science is also confirming that. Then there is of course religion, which takes everything and puts it into a belief system. So then you have these three models. But what I’m saying to you… no system of thought can give us access to reality. But that’s the model.
